Women Business Owners and Burnout

The life of an entrepreneur and business owner is nothing short of busy, overwhelming, and sometimes a bit chaotic (if not externally, certainly internally).

This can easily lead you to a place where you begin to start questioning yourself, and the choices you’ve made and drain you creatively.

If these things have been happening for a good amount of time, chances are you could be somewhere in the stages of burnout.

5 Reasons Women Entrepreneurs Are Experiencing Burnout

Women entrepreneurs and business owners shoulder a lot.

Being an entrepreneur and business owner involves risk-taking, doing a lot of the work yourself if you don’t have a team in place for support, and can have you in multiple roles at once.

It’s exhausting.

Check out this list below of the top reasons why women entrepreneurs and business owners experience burnout.

Reason #1 Women Entrepreneurs Experience Burnout: Lack of boundaries

If you’re a one-woman show then that probably means you are doing it all and more than likely putting in time all the time.

This can lead to work being the whole focus of your life.

I get it, there’s a lot on the line and you are also overworking yourself.

Reason #2 Women Entrepreneurs Experience Burnout: An abundance of responsibilities

Often being a woman means you are a caregiver to others including children, sometimes a spouse, a friend who needs some help, and maybe aging parents.

Chances are you may also be running the household and carrying the mental load of everything else going on outside of work.

It’s no wonder why you are running on fumes and depleted.

Reason #3 Women Entrepreneurs Experience Burnout: Expectations

Whew…here we go…expectations…

Expectations can come from all angles, self, others, and society as a whole.

Perfectionism, fear of failure, and not being “good enough.” This is a lot to carry around.

“What if I fail?”

“What if I succeed?”

Being a woman in a male-dominated industry, especially when it comes to being an entrepreneur and business owner, can create a lot of fear, feelings of rejection, cast self-doubt and create a lack of motivation.

Reason #4 Women Entrepreneurs Experience Burnout: High stress

The amount of stress from being a business owner and entrepreneur is a lot and consistently experiencing high levels of stress will add up over time.

This can lead to an increase in anxiety and depression which are symptoms of burnout

Reason #5 Women Entrepreneurs Experience Burnout: Poor self-care

There is so much going on. You take care of the business, the house, and others, and when it comes to taking care of yourself it typically gets shoved to the back burner.

Like so far back on the back burner that you forget about and then it becomes crispy because it’s burned.

Catch my drift.

When you start to evaluate those boundaries (see reason #1) and get more aligned with your values you can start taking better care of yourself.

It doesn’t need to be biweekly manicures and pedicures but it could look like giving yourself some grace and self-compassion. Taking some time to be more mindful instead of consistently going from one thing to the next.

It might be asking for help or starting to say “no” to something.

Whatever your self-care and self-compassion look like, just know that women entrepreneurs and business owners experience much more easily because they don’t fill their cup enough.
