Helpful Tips for When You Experience a Lack of Motivation

If only I had the motivation.”

I think we have all uttered the words at some point.

Shoot I know I do it on the regular!

Why is it that motivation can be so hard to come by?

If you are here, you probably have a busy work life, personal life, and have many roles in your life you’re trying to manage.

Life isn’t easy. It’s exhausting and draining at times.

The house needs to be cleaned, there are projects left undone, and the only energy you can muster up is to hit the play button on your next Netflix binge

I get it!

This is a no-judgment zone here and sometimes we really just need to have the Netflix binge.

5 Ways to Help Spark Motivation

A lack of motivation can be caused by many things including time, energy level, stress, anxiety, depression, and simply dislike for the task itself.

So here is the thing about motivation, most often it requires you to take some action first, and then the feelings often follow.

This is important to remember when considering the tips below!

Most people wait for the feelings to come first in order to get the action going. This might leave you sitting for quite some time.

Check out these 5 tips to help get you in action to get that motivation going.

Tip #1 to Help Spark Motivation: Connect to Your Values

There is a greater chance to follow through on something when it means something to you.

I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and talk to my clients often about what their values are and incorporate values into goals.

Knowing and using your values is an important part of ACT therapy.

Tip #2 to Help Spark Motivation: Break Down the Task

It is easy to have tunnel vision and get swept up into the bigger picture or end goal.

It’s understandable you may experience feelings of overwhelm or stress when this happens and it can lead to a loss of motivation.

A great way to reduce feelings of overwhelm is by breaking down the task or event into smaller more manageable pieces. Once you do this, you may find that you need to break down those pieces into smaller more manageable pieces and so on.

Tip #3 to Help Spark Motivation: Get Some Support

Talk with someone you trust like a friend or family member. Having some accountability can be helpful to get motivated.

Even better if someone can join you while you do the task or activity.

Tip #4 to Help Spark Motivation: Get Inspired

Watching a YouTube video or something similar is a great way to feel inspired and get motivated.  Nowadays, there are videos online for just about anything!

Watching a “how-to” video or a video on inspirational speeches can spark interest or motivation.

Tip #5 to Help Spark Motivation: Set Time Boundaries

Allow yourself to set small time blocks to engage in the activity or task.

Similar to tip #2, if it feels overwhelming set a timer for a short time and commit to doing the task or activity for that set time.

Once the timer goes off, if you have the motivation going you can make the choice to stop or keep going.

Set the time block appropriate to the activity or task.
