Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for High Achievers
Learn How Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is Helpful and Effective for High Achieving Women
High achievers are naturally very good at striving to attain their goals and are hard workers. They are driven and motivated and oftentimes have their foot on the gas and going forward.
But like with most things there may be some challenges or difficulties that high achievers encounter as well. An increase in stress, anxiety, perfectionism, and burnout are all very common.
Challenges high-achievers face are not uncommon but can impact some of the characteristics special of high-achievers. It becomes easy to distract and overcommit in your work and personal life or disconnect from others when you’re experiencing loneliness.
In this blog, I’m sharing with you how acceptance and commitment therapy is helpful for high-achievers.
I am an online ACT therapist Wilmington NC and work with anxious high-achieving women. I provide anxiety treatment, and also specialize in overcoming perfectionism, managing imposter syndrome, and burnout recovery.

ACT for Therapy with High Achievers
Check out a few of these important aspects that make up the basis of acceptance and commitment therapy and how they can be helpful to high achievers.
Drop the Struggle with Your Thoughts and Feelings
Anxious high-achievers have a lot on their mind and tend to become easily stressed which only increases anxiety. And thus the vicious cycle continues.
But what if we could change the cycle?
Acceptance and commitment therapy can help to create a shift in the relationship you have with your thoughts and feelings.
The self-doubt and imposter syndrome, the negative inner critic that shows up and tells you you’re not good enough leaving you feeling angry and sad.
ACT can help untangle from those thoughts and feelings and drop the struggle of battling back and forth with them.
Develop Self-Compassion
High-achievers can be hard themselves when something doesn’t work out or goals end up differently than excepted. Sometimes high-achievers can be compared to perfectionists.
Self-compassion doesn’t come easy and yet it is one of the things most needed when doing any kind of hard work. And high achievers are no strangers to hard work.
Practicing giving ourselves kindness and grace amid hard things can help with healing.
Be More Present in Your Life
Acceptance and commitment therapy emphasizes and relies on building mindfulness skills. Mindfulness creates opportunities to be more involved in your life, brings awareness, and allows for acceptance.
Acceptance of reality by acknowledging what is showing up rather than avoiding and pushing it away.
This can apply to our thoughts, feelings, urges, etc. Being more present in your life can help you make choices and feel more in control of how you want to be living your life.
Live in Your Values
It is easy for high achievers to lose sight of the things that matter most. Often when an ongoing problem or challenge is happening within you, it is because the situation and your values are not in alignment.
Knowing what your values are can help you to make choices, act like the person you want to be, and live the life you want.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy also emphasizes goal setting with your values in mind. When your values and your goals are joined, there is a greater outcome of “success.”
Put it All in Motion
One of the main reasons why I believe ACT is a helpful style of therapy for high-achievers is because high achievers are natural go-getters and are about being active and achieving goals.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is an active form of therapy that requires changes and action steps to be made towards goals for interventions to be most successful.
ACT is also a very experiential form of therapy and is most helpful when the client is engaged in exercises, activities, real-time interventions, or practice outside of sessions.

Online therapy offers flexibility for appointments by connecting with your online therapist on a safe and secure platform where both the therapist and client see and hear each other.
Virtual therapy can be a great asset to the busy high-achiever.
Online ACT therapy can be used in similar ways as in-person therapy. Acceptance and commitment therapy can be very experiential but that does not get limited by your online therapy appointments.
