5 Ways You Can Practice Self-Care Right Now
Practicing Self-Care is Fundamental in Building Better Mental Health
Self-care is so important when working on improving mental health. As an anxiety therapist it is also one of the top things I talk with my clients about. A lot of times my clients don’t understand how essential self-care really is and it also doesn’t have to break the bank to do either.
When I start talking about the importance of self-care my clients will tell me they don’t know what to do for self-care or more often that practicing self-care is selfish. Often there is a misconception that when you do something kind or nice for yourself, it is taking away from others. But this isn’t true and is a mindset that we work through in therapy. Clients will tell me they often feel a lot of guilt when starting to practice self-care.
Self-care has the ability to reduce anxiety and manage stress. When you are practicing taking care on yourself it helps you to handle stress easier. If you are a person that has a lot of anxiety and stress in your life you often feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Having a good self-care routine is a preventative measure you can take to better manage your mental health.

5 Ways You Can Practice Self-Care Right Now
There are many different ways to practice self-care. Listed below are some quick and easy ways you can put self-care in practice right now and that don’t require a lot of money.
Disconnect from technology - Turn your phone off, put it on airplane mode, or place your phone in another room and walk away. It is so easy to zone out and mindlessly scroll TikTok/Facebook/Instagram. Where you are constantly receiving emails, text messages, and phone calls from others, it can keep the pressure on to do things for others and take away from giving to yourself.
Walk outside - Step outside, kick your shoes off, put your toes in the grass, and take a nice deep breath. Sometimes it is essential to take a pause to regroup and get grounded.
Gratitude - Keep an ongoing list in your favorite journal or start your day naming 3 things you’re grateful for in the day.
Take care of your body - Trim your nails, put lotion on your body, give yourself a homemade facial - check out Pinterest for some recipes, soak your feet and put some lotion on them, or brush your hair. Our bodies go through a lot and these are some simple ways to give back to our body and take care of ourself.
Use your senses - Smell your favorite perfume, take a hot shower or bath, light your favorite smelling candle, turn on your favorite artist or album that just makes you feel good.
