Do You Work in a Healthy Work Environment?

Last week, I shared with you 5 signs of a toxic workplace and how working in a toxic work environment can lead to feelings of anxiety and work burnout. At some point, you’ve probably been there and know most of the signs quite well by now.

But what are some signs that you are in a healthy work environment? Hopefully, during your life, you can be and thrive in a workplace that can support and encourage you.

Working in a healthy workplace does not mean that it is absent of its stressors and challenges but that when these things happen they are managed and responded to appropriately.

I am a virtual therapist in Wilmington, NC, and I specialize in working with anxious high achieving women in Maryland and North Carolina. I provide anxiety treatment and burnout counseling to women that are stressed out and overwhelmed.

5 Signs of a Healthy Workplace

We spend so much of our time working and in the workplace. So if you find yourself being in a work environment that hits some of these qualities then you’ve hit the jackpot (insert slow clap here). Being in a healthy work environment can have a big impact on your mental health and physical health.

Here are some top signs you work in a healthy workplace:

Sign #1 of a healthy workplace: Respected Among Peers and Leadership

It’s completely normal to not get along with everyone you met. Chances are in the workplace you are not going to vibe with everyone you cross paths with and that’s okay.

But in a healthy work environment, treating others with respect is expected and modeled. This starts from leadership on down.

Sign #2 of a healthy workplace: Open and Honest Communication

In a healthy workplace, there isn’t a constant fear of retaliation or that you may lose your job because you voice an opinion.

In a healthy work environment, being able to speak up, give opinions, and feedback is essential and encouraged.

Sign #3 of a healthy workplace: Boundaries

Boundaries can take form in many different ways. One of the biggest boundary that isn’t respected in a toxic workplace is the time boundary.

A healthy workplace is going to recognize the value in its employees taking time off to recharge, energize, and care for themselves.

Setting limits on work time including how many hours per day and when you work is important to keep in mind. This also applies to trying to separate work and home life as best as possible. It may not always be possible to get that work-life balance but instead striving for a work-life harmony is key that can help to keep you happy and healthy.

Sign #4 of a healthy workplace: Motivation and Appreciation

You may not always enjoy getting up and going to work, but if you work in a healthy workplace, chances are you are going to experience better motivation to do your job and do a good job at your job.

This also could be because you feel more appreciated in the workplace. When we feel valued, naturally it can increase our motivation or sustain us to continue to do good work.

Sign #5 of a healthy workplace: Growth and Learning is Encouraged

It’s always a good sign when the company you work for encourages you to strengthen your skills, supports upward growth, and is wanting to set you up for success.

And yes, sometimes this means through your growth and learning opportunities with the company, you move on to bigger and better things. While that company may be sad to see you go, this means they can also support your growth.
