What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a therapy model aimed to help you build flexibility with how you respond to your thoughts and feelings. ACT also incorporates being more present in your life and engaging in the things that are important to you.

Why Knowing Your Values is Important

I love talking to my clients about their values and helping my clients explore and be guided by their values. Listed below are some of the reasons why knowing your values are important.

Reason #1 Knowing Your Values is Important: Values can help guide you in important decisions

Throughout life, you are going to encounter pain and difficult moments. Knowing your values doesn’t lessen the chances of this happening or lessen the feelings you may experience. However, your values are something you can constantly come back to as a way to help be a guide during hard decisions.

Reason #2 Knowing Your Values is Important: Values can make life more enjoyable

If you know what your values are and behave in alignment with your values, chances are there may be less of a struggle or frustration you encounter. Of course, this doesn’t mean we can escape the hard stuff but regularly if you continue to encounter a problem, chances are whatever you are struggling with is not lining up with your values.

Reason #3 Knowing Your Values is Important: Values help you to focus on what is important to you

It can be really easy to get off track and lose sight of what is important to you when life is constantly coming at you or so it seems. Being able to identify your values and come back to them can be grounding. Almost similar to being your North Star.

Reason #4 Knowing Your Values is Important: Values help you to take action

Your values help to guide you on how you want to behave in your life. This can be across the board including in relationships, at work, with your health, and how you spend your leisure time.

Once you identify your values, think about some of the behaviors that follow within those values.

For example, if you place importance on the value of being supportive in your relationships behaviors might include cheering on a friend in their local softball game or asking your partner what you can do to help them for the day.

Reason #5 Knowing Your Values is Important: Values can help you to reach your goals

Values and goals are very different but get confused to be the same thing. Your values are the here and now and your goals are what you are striving for in the future.

However, your values can come into play to help you meet your goals. Check out this ACT SMART goals guide to learn more about how values are important to goal setting.
